Conducting

I am active as a conductor and director of new music.

In 2002 I founded the vocal ensemble EXAUDI with the soprano Juliet Fraser. I am currently the ensemble’s Artistic Director, Acting Executive Director and conductor.

I am also currently Musical Director of ensemble 7bridges (Durham), and I coordinate and frequently conduct the New Music Ensemble at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London.

I work regularly as a guest conductor, and have directed ensembles and orchestras including Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBC SSO, musikFabrik, L’Instant Donné, Talea, London Sinfonietta, BCMG and BBC Singers, amongst many others.

My principal interest is in contemporary repertoire, particularly of an experimental or conceptual orientation, but I also have a strong interest in music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque (Machaut, Ars subtilior, the 16thC Italian madrigal, Monteverdi and Schütz) and direct this repertoire regularly with EXAUDI and other groups – often alongside the music of the present day.

Although I have done plenty of it, I am not primarily a choral director!
